The Siberian Husky

From the harshest of climates in Siberia, Russia sprang a true survivor with such speed, endurance and friendly attitude that is the Siberian Husky. A tribe of Eskimos known as the Chukchi originated the Siberian. Their name Husky is derived from part of the word Eski or Husky. If not for the Siberian Huskies, this tribe of Eskimos would not have survived....Read More

The Siberian was developed, and very successfully so, to be a team player whether that team is you and the dog, or you and several dogs. They are independent with a stubborn intelligence that can easily try the patience of even the most experienced dog trainer! But...this headstrong nature is a result of breeding a dog that could make its own decisions on the trail.

The Siberian Husky is quite a bit smaller than other arctic breeds, but continues to amaze spectators as being most capable in the AKC's Working Group. They are described in the Breed Standard as a "medium-sized" working dog, quick and light on its feet and free and graceful in action." They are engineered to move effortlessly across the snow, or through a show ring. Their profile resembles that of a wolf, but they are no closer to a wolf than any other domestic dog. Another unforgettable feature of the Siberian is their breathtakingly beautiful eyes. They can be glacier-blue, brown, Parti-colored or have one of each. The eyes are almond-shaped and almost humanly expressive.

A Siberian's coat is engineered for harsh weather, but it has been proven that they are happy in almost any climate. The Siberian is a very clean breed and strives to maintain their own cleanliness almost as diligently as cats. All colors of coat are allowed in the AKC Breed Standard.

The disposition of the Siberian Husky is just as important, if not more so than their physical appearance. The well-bred Siberian is balanced in beauty and temperament. They are NOT the vicious fighting dog, nor incorruptible warrior as depicted in Jack London's writings. The Siberian is a loving, gentle spirit who wants to kiss everyone. They are however, not clingy or constantly longing for human acceptance. Although they extend their affection to all, they reserve their respect for those who earn it. The way to earn that respect is to be a firm and gentle leader. Thus the Siberian Husky's ability to adapt and survive.
